AL – The American Civil Liberties Union is asking the U.S. Department of Education to investigate what it calls “unlawful” single-sex education programs in Birmingham’s Huffman Middle School and another district in Idaho.  The ACLU filed complaints with the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, saying the programs appear to violate federal law by forcing students into a single-sex environment with little or no alternative options, rely on harmful gender stereotypes and deprive students of equal educational opportunities merely because of their sex.

The single-sex program at Huffman Middle School has been in place since 2010 and students who wish to be in coeducational classes must transfer to another school. Huffman students are separated by sex for all classes, even during lunch.  According to the complaint filed by the ACLU, instructions for teaching boys call for stressing heroic behavior that shows what it means to “be a man.” According to the ACLU, the school relied on a book that teaches that boys are better than girls in math because their bodies receive daily surges of testosterone, while girls have similar skills only a few days per month when they experience increased estrogen during the menstrual cycle.

 

Listen I’m all for establishing men as the dominant sex at an early age.  Obviously I firmly believe to my core that all girls should be put in a room full of dolls and Barbies and taught how to vacuum and do the laundry make sandwiches, just like any other red blooded male believes.  But I guess I just don’t really see how same sex classes helps boys learn?  I bet the girls graduate this school as doctors while the boys end up as neanderthals who have a unique set of skills when it comes to punting paper footballs and pulling chairs out from under kids when the sit down.    Seriously remember grammar school?  Chicks were the only ones who ever did shit.  Yeah obviously the men become smarter as time goes by but if it wasn’t for girls when I was younger I’d be Billy Madison right now.  They’re the ones who asked when homework forgot to get assigned, the ones who color coded their binders for me to steal and cheat off of, the ones who actually did the work for me to copy.   If a group project came up and you didn’t have a girl in your crew it was auto-F.  They mature early enough that they realized school wasn’t actually games of two-hand touch football surrounded with learning cursive mixed in your free time.  So as crazy as it is, I’m with the ACLU here.  Make the classes mixed gender.  Someone has to do the boy’s homework.
