4.6 Million Dollar Man Bob Stoops Thinks College Players Are Already Paid Enough In Scholarships And Tutors
NORMAN, Okla.— There’s no avoiding it now. One social outrage has been identified and exorcised, and another has been teed up. Goodbye, BCS. Hello, pay for play. In addition to scholarships, college players get tutors, nutritionists and strength and conditioning coaches that regular students do not. That’s one of the reasons Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops thinks players shouldn’t be paid.
“I tell my guys all the time,” Stoops says, “you’re not the first one to spend a hungry Sunday without any money.”
“You know what school would cost here for non-state guy? Over $200,000 for room, board and everything else,” Stoops said. “That’s a lot of money. Ask the kids who have to pay it back over 10-15 years with student loans. You get room and board, and we’ll give you the best nutritionist, the best strength coach to develop you, the best tutors to help you academically, and coaches to teach you and help you develop. How much do you think it would cost to hire a personal trainer and tutor for 4-5 years?
“I don’t get why people say these guys don’t get paid. It’s simple, they are paid quite often, quite a bit and quite handsomely.”
Listen I get the whole dilemma about paying college players. I don’t think college players should be getting gigantic contracts and rolling in dough and just completely throwing out every notion of amateurism which is basically what makes college sports so great. But hearing a guy like Bob Stoops making 4.6 million dollars a year solely because of the kids playing football for him for absolutely free condescend and talk down to those same players makes my blood boil. I mean the whole argument is just stupid to begin with. The other kids in the school having to pay out of pocket, taking on student loans for their education, blah blah the whole sob story. Last I checked that kid paying back student loans over 10-15 years didn’t just have 20 million people watch him play a sports game on TV providing TV contracts, advertising, and bajillions in revenue for the school including the $4.6 million salary for the head coach. The star running back for the football team is not comparable to the Joe Blow Poli Sci major. Joe Blow Poli Sci major didn’t just sell out your 82,000 seat stadium.
But seriously that’s nice of Oklahoma to provide nutritionists and strength and condition coaches and top of the line facilities though all out of the kindness of their heart (or to keep their players in great shape so that they can play better on the field and produce a winning team to generate more revenue for the University). That’s nice of Bob Stoops to provide tutors because they really care about their student-athletes’ education (so they can remain eligible to keep playing on the football team since they were most likely pushed into the school despite not being academically qualified enough so that they could play on the football team). Like he said, there are plenty of people out there who generate millions in revenue and go hungry on Sundays.
